Take Action: Bullying Legislation
Attention YOUTH and ADULTS:
SCHA-MI has been invited to participate in a study with the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences and James Madison College about the impact of grassroots advocacy on the state legislature. We are studying if legislators pay more attention to calls from youth, professionals, or registered voters regarding bullying legislation.
This legislation is often referred to as Matt’s Law, named after Matt Eppling, a student from East Lansing, Michigan. Matt was assaulted by some high school students as part of a “Welcome to High School Hazing.” His parents tried to get Matt to go to the police, but he was afraid of retribution. Matt killed himself. His parents have worked to make sure that Michigan finally passes a bullying law.
Matt's Law will require every school district in MI to have an anti-bully policy. Currently schools are not required to have such a policy. Without a policy, teachers, students and parents alike do not know the boundaries of what is and what is not acceptable behavior. The policies will also be very useful for local law enforcement to better assist local schools.
What Can You Do to Help?
