  • Prison Phone Justice

Imagine having to pay $15 up front for a chance to talk to a loved one whose
incarcerated for up to 15 minutes. That’s more than it costs to call Ecuador ($.60/
minutes). Does that sound extreme? It is! Yet, that’s exactly what’s happening
in Cook County Jail, in Illinois.  Securus Technologies--the sole provider of telephones in Cook County
    Jail--is charging a service of $15 for a 15-minute phone call.

It’s an outrage that families who can least afford it are being forced to pay these
expensive rates in order to stay connected with loved ones behind bars.

Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle is now calling on the jail to discontinue this service.

Join us as we send a message to Board President Preckwinkle. Let her know that families across IL want to be able to afford to call their loved ones.

  • No to Private Prisons in Michigan

Tell Michigan Legislators "No to Private Prisons"

House Bills 5174 and 5177 would allow the DOC to contract with the GEO Group to re-open the closed facility in Baldwin to hold MDOC inmates as long as the contract reflects at least a 10% annual savings.

The facility in Baldwin was run by the GEO Group from 1999 to 2005 to house MDOC youthful offenders.  The funding for that contract was cancelled in 2005 because a study by the Michigan Auditor General showed that the daily cost per inmate at the facility was greater than 33 of the State’s 37 other facilities run by the DOC.

It didn’t work then, so why would the Legislators expect a different outcome this time? The Legislature seems determined to see history repeat itself… all at the expense of taxpayer dollars, state employee jobs, and accountability.  Apparently we need to remind them of just why it is the contract with the GEO Group was cancelled the first time around, and why privatization is not the answer when it comes to Corrections Policy.

TELL THE LEGISLATOR TO VOTE NO ON HB 5174 & 5177

We have made it easy for you to take action.  Plug your zip-code in below and you will be prompted to a letter page.  (limited only to residents of Michigan)

Illinois - Tell Your Representative: Vote YES on HB 3944

Cell phones and smart phones have become an integral part of our lives many of us regularly pull out the phone to snap a random photo or capture video of something on the streets that captures our attention. But, did you know that you could be arrested and prosecuted for eavesdropping if you record audio of a police officer doing his or her public duty in a public place? It’s true.

    Read more about the bill.

Tell your State Representative that no one should be arrested for audio recording a police officer in public.

  • Save Public Law Libraries

Last year, without legislative authority, the Administrator of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals began closing public law libraries across the state.

This was done in contradiction to existing statutes within West Virginia Code.

PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.

  • Vote Yes on SJ 64

  • Hawai'i Stop Using Private Prisons

Tell Hawai'i Gov. Neil Abercrombie to Stop Using Private Prisons

Davina Waialae wipes tears from her eyes while discussing her son, Bronson Nunuha, who was murdered in his cell at a privately run prison in Arizona, at a news conference on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 in Honolulu. Waialae and her family have sued the state of Hawaii and the Corrections Corporation of America, accusing the state of negligence and the company of failing to properly staff the prison.

Today the family of Bronson Nunuha, a 26-year-old Hawaii inmate who was brutally murdered at a Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) (NYSE:CXW) private prison in Arizona in 2010, filed a lawsuit in state court against CCA and the State of Hawaii.  The suit exposes CCA’s business model of grossly short-staffing prisons and cutting corners in every way possible to make its private prisons profitable.

"It's still hard for my family," Davina Waialae, Nunuha's mother, said at a press conference on the lawsuit. "My grandson has to grow up without a dad." Nunuha, 26, was serving a five-year sentence for burglary and property damage. He was nine months away from finishing his sentence when he was killed.

Send a letter to Hawai'i Gov. Neil Abercrombie to take action today.

  • No on SB-2038

Tell Your Senator to Vote No on SB2038!

A major prison privatization bill in Florida, SB2038, is pending in the state Senate. If passed, the bill would privatize almost 30 facilities and put 3,800 state employees out of work (although they could be rehired by private prison companies at lower wages and fewer benefits). What savings would be achieved by this unprecedented prison privatization plan? Less than 1% of the state's corrections budget. Send a message to Florida senators asking them to oppose SB2038!

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!  Speak out now and reach out to your friends.
