Would you like to see a safer Lynnwood for bicyclists?
If you've been following the news, you may know that the state granted Lynnwood funding for bicycle lanes on 208th, 188th and 168th streets. Now, after voting unanimously for bike lanes, the City Council may vote to abandon the bike lanes at their Monday meeting and lose $150,000 for better bicycling.
A few protesters have challenged the removal of parking along parts of these streets. While on-street parking is a great convenience, the priority for our roads should be to transport people, and to do so safely. The state Dept. of Transportation has identified restriping these streets as the way to prevent more than the 84 serious injury crashes recorded there. This would benefit everyone on the road - not just bicyclists.
These bike facilities would also help form a network connecting the Interurban Trail with Edmonds Community College, and create a safe route to the Lynnwood Recreation Center for families.
