Supporter,
Please take a moment to support a more bike-friendly Lynnwood.
Bicycle lanes planned for parts of 208th, 188th and 168th streets, have been getting called into question in the past few weeks. To make a difference, you can attend that City Council's work session on Monday if you are able. You can also email your City Councilmembers below.
Lynnwood residents have said in surveys and a recent city visioning process that they want a bikeable, walkable city. The bike lanes would connect the Interurban Trail with Edmonds Community College, make frequent bus service on Hwy. 99 accessible to those who ride to the bus stop, and let families bike to the Lynnwood Recreation Center. The City Council held several meetings, and voted 6-0 last fall to approve the lanes. But a few residents of the affected streets oppose the plan and demand on-street parking in the public right of way.
A few points to keep in mind:
-Safety first: the WA State Department of Transportation counted 84 serious injury crashes on these streets. The city designed its plan to eliminate many of the visibility issues and conflicts that occur between all users of the road.
-Improving safety is also the number one way to get more people riding, more often. When surveyed, bicyclists in Washington say safety as their top reason for not being on the road, and they'd bike more if only they felt safe. Painting bike lanes on these formerly unfriendly streets will bring new bicyclists to the streets.
-Bike facilities should form a connected network that gets people to their destinations. Opponents of the lanes have asked why bicyclists don't use the perfectly good trail nearby. While it's great to have the Interurban trail, it does not provide bicyclists with east-west routes through Lynnwood.
The city council has a work session on the bike lanes on Monday, March 30. Whether you can or can't make it please email your councilmembers and urge them to support safe roads and bicycle facilities:
Thank you for your advocacy,
